Pay Structure
Large national carriers typically advertise CPM rates of 55–70¢ for solo OTR. Some have performance bonuses and safety bonuses that can bring effective CPM closer to 75–80¢, but those bonuses have eligibility requirements and are not guaranteed. Hylas Companion company drivers start at 85¢+ CPM with no performance gates — you earn that rate from mile one. The difference on 2,500 miles/week between 65¢ and 85¢ is $500 per week, or $26,000 annually.
Large carriers often supplement low CPM with sign-on bonuses ($1,000–$5,000 paid over 6–12 months) and orientation pay. A $3,000 bonus paid over 12 months is $57.69/week. That doesn't offset a 20¢ CPM gap.
Home Time
Large carriers running 50,000+ drivers cannot customize home time by driver. Their dispatch systems optimize for freight coverage, not individual schedules. The result: home time at large carriers is often inconsistent in practice even when it's clearly stated in the contract. At smaller fleets like Hylas Companion, your recruiter has direct access to operations and can escalate home time issues that wouldn't get traction if you went directly through the carrier's driver services line.
Recruiter Support After You're Hired
This is the most significant practical difference. At large carriers, once you're hired, your recruiter's job is done. You're turned over to a driver manager or dispatcher who handles hundreds of drivers. Your original recruiter is working on new hires. At Hylas Companion, your recruiter remains your direct contact throughout your time with us. If something in your program isn't working — pay discrepancy, home time not being honored, equipment issue — you call your recruiter, not an 800 number. This matters most when something goes wrong.
Equipment
Large carriers run mixed fleets that range from brand-new trucks for top-tier drivers to older equipment in general rotation. Fleet average age at many large carriers is 3–5 years. At Hylas Companion, all trucks are 2020 model year or newer — Peterbilt 579, Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680 Next Gen, Volvo VNL 760/860, International LT625. Standard APU, 12V refrigerator, 2,000W inverter, and Opti Idle. No older equipment is in rotation.
Cameras
Interior-facing cameras are standard at most large national carriers. This is a significant quality-of-life issue for drivers who spend weeks at a time in the cab. At Hylas Companion, camera policy varies by carrier program and is disclosed upfront before you commit. Many programs do not use interior-facing cameras. Your recruiter specifies the exact camera setup for any program you're considering before orientation.
Who Hylas Companion Is Right For — and Who It Isn't
Hylas Companion is well-suited for experienced CDL-A drivers who have driven for at least one carrier, understand the industry, and are specifically looking for higher CPM rates, newer equipment, and more direct support. We are also a good fit for SAP drivers seeking a carrier network that handles placement honestly rather than accepting applications and declining post-background-check. We're probably not the right call for drivers who want the training pipeline and extensive orientation resources of a mega-carrier, or for drivers who are still in a CDL training program (though our trainee program does exist for CDL holders with limited road experience).
The honest version: no carrier is perfect for every driver. The right carrier depends on your experience level, home time needs, equipment preferences, and financial goals. We'd rather tell you that upfront than sell you a program that isn't a fit.
